Electric Propulsion System
Product Description

Electric propulsion system is adapting to IMO regulations by using electrical energy to have environmental benefits. In conventional power system arrangements, the ship’s propellers are driven by a diesel propulsion engine while the supply of electricity for the other vessel loads are transmitted via the Generator on the vessel. However, the recent introduction of IMO emission regulation such as NOx,SOx,CO2 and PM(Particulate Matter) present challenges and limits to the combustion diesel engines in vessels. Using an electric propulsion system, where the energy transmission is electrical and the propulsion and thruster are variable speed electrically driven, fuel consumption can be reduced significantly for many vessel types with environmental benefits. The propeller shaft of the vessel is connected to large motors, which can be D.C or A.C driven and are known as propulsion motors. Power for propulsion motor is supplied by generators and prime mover assembly. In electric propulsion systems, lower emission levels of NOx, SOx, CO2 and PM, as well as reduced fuel consumption, can be achieved by operating the generators within the optimal operational range as the propulsion load varies.

Advantages

1. Lower total fuel oil consumption

3. Cheaper than diesel fuel

2. Reduced air pollutant emissions

4. Low vibration and noise.

Why use Electric Propulsion System?

The shipping industry has come a long way as far as R & D for reducing costs of propulsion without increasing marine pollution. The conventional propulsion system of the ship is efficient but requires high operating costs and increases the marine pollution. Among all the prospective alternate power sources, electrical propulsion system is one of the best tried out alternative in today’s time.
